Nintendo was founded in September 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, who began manufacturing and selling Japanese Hanafuda playing cards in Kyoto.

The name kept the Wii memory but did not create enough new separation. The hardware concept was harder to explain than Wii’s motion controller. The visual identity did not create a sharp enough break.
Nintendo’s own sales data shows the result: Wii U reached 13.56 million hardware units, dramatically below Wii.
Wii U is proof that friendly branding is not enough. The concept must be understood in seconds, especially when the name sits close to an older hit product.

The Switch name is unusually good because it describes the product behavior directly. It is not only a brand name. It is the instruction.
